About
ALWAYS KEEP MOVING
My Passion
Hi, I am Doctor Abi. Ask anyone who has known me for the last forty-something years, and they will describe me as shy, quiet, and introverted, and they are right! My passion for health and fitness goes beyond the traditional “eat right and exercise regularly” shebang. It has enabled me to see beyond my perceived weaknesses to focus on my strengths. I have shared this passion with other women over the years, helping them along their respective health and fitness journeys.
My Journey
I was born and raised in Nigeria, where I struggled with childhood obesity and its adverse psychological effects. My nickname in high school was “Oromb,” which literarily means “fat” in my native language. Interestingly, I still have that one friend, Lola, who calls me “Oromb” to this day. Though hard to believe now, I struggled academically in my early years. Despite this, I made it to medical school. Afterward, my application for residency training in public health in Nigeria was denied. Fast forward to 2004, during my pediatric residency training in the U.S, I stumbled across an infomercial for a home workout video, and it ignited my passion for fitness.
When I started my health and fitness journey several years ago, I was still overweight. I managed to lose that weight and keep it off. In the good times and the bad times, my faith in God and my passion for health and fitness kept me going. Both gave me the confidence to start a private pediatric practice with my husband in 2013. I did go back to school to obtain my Master’s in Business Administration because my medical education did nothing to prepare me to become an entrepreneur. Eight years later, we now have two pediatric offices and are still growing.
My Purpose
Fifteen years and several stops after being rejected from pursuing my interest in public health, I obtained my Master’s degree in Public Health. I love being a pediatrician, and my work with kids brings me joy daily. However, it is almost impossible to treat a child without paying attention to the child’s support system. Our health is affected by the social conditions in our environment. That is why my interest goes beyond treating the child to promoting women’s health and, hence, community health.
Other Fun Facts
In case you have not deduced this yet, I am an avid reader and an avid learner, and yes, I know that does not sound like fun. I also love to dance. With my passion for fitness and dance, it’s a no-brainer that I became a Zumba instructor. Lastly, I have a great passion for good food, and one of the skills I have had to develop is balancing my love for different delicious meals with my desire to eat healthy, nutritious meals.
I live in Kokomo, Indiana, with my husband and two boys, and I unashamedly enjoy all the benefits of being the only lady in the house.
That is me in a nutshell!
